In the mid-20th century, during that transformative era, postmodern design emerged as a fresh trend, breaking through the constraints of modernism with its advocacy of romanticism, individualism, liberalization, and diversification. Designers sought spaces for self-expression within this trend, liberating their creations from the cold, rigid efficiency, industrialization, and standardization of modernism. Each work became like a poem, a painting, narrating the designer’s story and conveying their understanding and emotions about the world. Postmodernism is not just a style but also an attitude towards life.
This trend is reflected in a two-story duplex residential space in Shangcheng District, Hangzhou. The project was fully designed by DAKAI Design, where the owner, a fashion designer, resonated with the romantic and personal feelings advocated in postmodernism design concepts. They hoped their home could fully showcase their personal design ideas and pay tribute to the excellent designs of that era.
The ground floor unfolds as a fluid space with blurred boundaries, seamlessly integrating the living room, kitchen, foyer, and hallway into a cohesive unit, providing a perfect backdrop for the soft furnishings. Historical masterpieces define the functional attributes of each space, creating an infinitely non-cyclic flow of activity in the public area, while showcasing the collector’s personal philosophy like carefully selected exhibits.
